I’ve been saying for
weeks months that I want to get my hair shaped/styled but I’ve also been utterly undecided about the whole thing. Like most naturals on the one hand I yearn for length & when I say length I mean length like Lynelle Kenned’s. Then on the other hand I just feel like this current state of my hair is rather boring & uninspiring & needs a bit of a snip to jazz it up.
What to do? 😦 A case of #firstworldproblems indeed.
So yesterday for some reason I woke up & decided I was going to get this done. In my moment of (brief) clarity I booked at appointment to see Matthew Mansoor, celebrity stylist, image consultant & TRESsemè ambassador at Pulse Salon who I’d been following on twitter & BBM. I took the 1st available appointment which was in 2 hours time so that between getting out of bed & rushing there I didn’t have time change my mind again!
I loved Matt’s approach immediately. Before he even touched any tool or scissors, we just sat down & chatted about my hair journey, goals & lifestyle. He shared quite a lot about my particular curl pattern & how best to manage it. When he understood my long-term aim of growing my hair out he dropped the bomb: that I shouldn’t do the shaping/styling that I’d come in for but just keep growing my hair until there is more length to play around with and he assured me I’m almost there. We agreed that I need to keep giving my hair loads of TLC to keep it growing healthy & strong especially deep conditioning treatments (both at home & in-salon), alternating between moisture (which I’ve been solely focused on up to now) & also protein.
I left the salon 15 minutes later slightly disappointed that I wasn’t sporting a new look but mostly super impressed with Matt’s frank, detailed & selfless feedback – feedback that had me leaving the salon without spending a cent! Imagine!
Let’s be clear, my hair will never grow fast enough for my liking but hey that’s just my DNA. Truth be told I think I knew all along that the right thing to do was to wait but hearing it from an expert’s mouth was obviously the reinforcement that I so badly needed.
I made sure I popped by the store & picked up a protein treatment en route home which is soaking into my curls as a write this. When I reflected on the day’s events, this picture from a recent vacation to Istanbul came into my mind. I’m sitting in the foyer of our apartment block where I was waiting (patiently I think!) while my iPhoneography addicted hubby was taking some pics out on the street nearby. Things have evolved so much now that I no longer object or try to rush him, I just find a quiet corner & wait (& usually tweet!). So I’m hoping that this notion & rumour I’ve heard about of patience being a virtue is catching on, even if just a tad… 🙂
Oh & you must add Matt on BBM (2145A704) – he shares a great hair tip everyday (for all hair types) & sometimes takes questions too. And he’s just generally a nice guy all round!
